Scope and Content Gullan's Close is a dog-leg lane which runs from the Canongate to Holyrood Road. It has had various spellings (Gillon, Goolen, Goolan, Gillilan) and also been known as Haliburton's Close and Cant's Close. Its current name is believed to derive from 1763 when James Gullan, a stabler, had premises in the close. The east side of the southern part of the close is occupied by this late 20th-century block of flats at 25 Gullan's Close. Dating from the 1980s, this four-storeyed block is cream-harled, and has blue and white-painted balconied entrance 'platties', with a brown-harled stairtower (right).
