Scope and Content This map of the farm of Lipney illustrates the complex and cumulative character of the archaeological remains extending round the eastern and northern flanks of Dumyat. Of particular note are the head-dykes, which evidently represent several phases of construction and appear to be among the later components of the remains. While the main 18th-century farms of Foreside, Quarterside and Backside are stone-built, there is a series of turf byre-houses, identified by the letter A, which all lie beyond the head-dykes, usually adjacent to ephemeral traces of rig. Rather than representing an earlier phase of settlement, these byre-houses appear to be the dwellings of minor tenants, in at least one case dating from the mid-18th century.
