Description Adobe Illustrator plans showing the range of layouts of farmsteads within Menstrie Glen. Fig 31 in "Well shelterd & watered" Menstrie Glen, a farming landscape near Stirling.

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number GV 005179

Category Digital Files (Non-image)

Scope and Content The farmsteads within the glen display a range of layouts, from the strictly formal plan of the improved steading at Loss (see also fig. 32) to the more haphazard arrangement of buildings at Ploverburn or Whittetsbank. The uppermost row are turf-built, and are probably the farmsteads of the poorest tenants. However, the contrast between, for example, Ploverburn and Little Jerah suggests that a similar range of status probably exist amongst the stone-built farmstead.
