Scope and Content This map shows the extents of the different types of rig recorded in the glen, as well as remains of the enclosures and head-dykes associated with them. Together, they give an overall impression of the maximum extent of farming activity throughout Menstrie Glen in the mid-18th century, but the different types of rig also broadly reflect the contraction of cultivation that has taken place. The broad, high-crowned blocks of rig, some of which are known to have been in use in the first half of the 18th century, tend to lie at the periphery of the overall area under cultivation, as do the patches of wide low rig. In contrast, the narrow low rig is far more extensive, occupying many of the lower slopes, and almost certainly represents the main areas under cultivation on the eve of the Improvements. Late 18th and 19th century cultivation is entirely restricted to the lower slopes around Loss and Jerah.
