Scope and Content The historic burgh of Rothesay developed along the High Street leading inland from the harbour area. However, the importance of the High Street diminished with the change in axis for development along Montague Street and Victoria Street parallel to the shore during the boom period of the 19th century. Consequently, development along the High Street during the 19th century was limited, and many of the original buildings were demolished in the mid-20th century to make way for large scale local authority housing developments. This redevelopment of sites along the High Street saw many of the 19th-century tenements and other buildings on the east side of the street demolished in the 1960s and later to make way for large blocks of local authority or housing association flats. This two- and three-storeyed development is typical of the 1970s, being pale grey-harled, with small windows. The varying height of the blocks built around a courtyard adds some interest to an otherwise fairly plain development. The mid-20th century saw widescale demolition and rebuilding of housing within town centres. In particular, the tenements of the 19th century were seen as being unfit for modern-day living, and were torn down to be replaced by modern blocks of flats with all mod-cons.
