Scope and Content Rothesay was an industrial town and commercial port long before its expansion due to tourism. The earliest industries set up to take advantage of the water supply from the Water of Fad, and in 1779, Scotland's second cotton mill was established in Rothesay by James Kenyon. A number of small mills were established, basing themselves around Barone Road, Russell Street and Mill Street. The focus for the town's industry remains in this vicinity today. This plaque is located above the central close within the group of four terraced houses in Sheriff's Croft which were built in the late 1940s/early 1950s for the Scottish Veterans' Garden City Association (SVGCA), to rent out to disabled ex-servicemen, merchant marine, police and fire brigade. Despite its relatively plain appearance, the terrace has been built to mimic a more rural setting, with relatively large gardens and open space around it. The terrace is symmetrical, with a two-storeyed central block with gabled windows at first-floor level, and single-storeyed end blocks. The modern replacement double-glazed windows have been stled to mimic the original sash and case windows. The SVGCA was founded in 1915 by eight Scottish professional businessmen in Edinburgh, to provide housing for wounded veterans returning from World War I requiring suitable accommodation. Local authorities assisted in the process of homebuilding, and the SVGCA now has 614 houses on 74 sites across Scotland.
