Scope and Content Rothesay was an industrial town and commercial port long before its expansion due to tourism. The earliest industries set up to take advantage of the water supply from the Water of Fad, and in 1779, Scotland's second cotton mill was established in Rothesay by James Kenyon. A number of small mills were established, basing themselves around Barone Road, Russell Street and Mill Street. The focus for the town's industry remains in this vicinity today. A series of semi-detached villas and cottages were built along Barone Road leading out of town during the growth period of the mid- to late 19th century. This one-and-a-half-storeyed group at (right to left) 53-61 Barone Road are more rustic in appearance wih rubble sandstone and tall gables in the outer bays with a smaller gabled dormer in the central bay above the paired entrance doors. The larger properties along Barone Road probably housed managers and foremen working in the various industrial premises in town. The elevated location on Barone Road gives these properties views across the town in all directions.
