Scope and Content Rothesay was an industrial town and commercial port long before its expansion due to tourism. The earliest industries set up to take advantage of the water supply from the Water of Fad, and in 1779, Scotland's second cotton mill was established in Rothesay by James Kenyon. A number of small mills were established, basing themselves around Barone Road, Russell Street and Mill Street. The focus for the town's industry remains in this vicinity today. A series of detached and semi-detached villas and cottages were built along Barone Road leading out of town during the growth period of the mid- to late 19th century. This group at (right to left) 91-99 Barone Road are examples of the smaller scale cottages which were built on the edge of town. Originally single-storeyed, all have been extended into the attic, with a variety of dormer styles. Most have had their original windows replaced with modern double glazed units of varying designs. These cottages were probably built for some of the workers within the industrial area of Rothesay. Larger properties would have housed managers and foremen. The elevated location on Barone Road gives these cottages views across the town in all directions.
