Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. Dating from the mid- to late 19th century, Lovely Cottage on the corner of Gortans Road and High Road, has the appearance of an estate lodge. The cottagehas a large canted bay window facing onto High Road, with a gabled entrance porch in the re-entrant angle between this wing and the two-storeyed wing to the left. This has small bipartite windows in the gable, which has a flattened roofline. The cottage is an unusually small-scale development in the Port Bannatyne Expansion Area of Townscape Character. which comprises much larger tenements or detached, semi-detached and terraced villas.
