Scope and Content As Rothesay's popularity grew during the 19th century, the town expanded along the shore northwards to the fishing village of Port Bannatyne, and southwards to the dispersed hamlet of Ascog. The tiny area known as Montford developed on the northern edge of Ascog on a narrow strip of land between the shore and the steeply rising Common Hill inland. Most of the area of Montford consists of 19th-century terraced houses, but this early 19th-century cottage is one of the earliest buildings in the area. It is the only building on the seaward side of the main route through the area, and has been much altered and added to. However it still retains much of its traditional character being white-painted with black dressings, and having decorative chimney stacks and pots.
