Scope and Content As Rothesay's popularity grew during the 19th century, the town expanded along the shore northwards to the fishing village of Port Bannatyne, and southwards to the dispersed hamlet of Ascog. The tiny area known as Montford developed on the northern edge of Ascog on a narrow strip of land between the shore and the steeply rising Common Hill inland. Most of the area of Montford consists of 19th-century terraced or semi-detached houses, just like this pair of semi-detached two-storeyed houses at 43 and 44 Craigmore Road. This terrace is typical of many seen across Rothesay, being built of the same red sandstone used throughout the town, particularly in many of the tenements. Like many of the properties in the town built at this time, the houses still have large full-height bay windows to one bay, which brings plenty of light into the properties and also gives views out across the bay.
