Scope and Content As Rothesay's popularity grew during the 19th century, the town expanded along the shore northwards to the fishing village of Port Bannatyne, and southwards to the dispersed hamlet of Ascog. The tiny area known as Montford developed on the northern edge of Ascog on a narrow strip of land between the shore and the steeply rising Common Hill inland. Montford House sits in a large plot on Craigmore Road and is the only detached house within the Montford area. It is also one of the earliest buildings in the area, dating from c.1850. It is plain Classical in style, with gabled eaves above the central bay, which slightly projects on this entrance elevation. It retains its lying-pane (horizontal) glazing in all windows. The tripartite entrance is reached by a flight of steps enclosed by cast-iron balustrades. The small corbelled balcony above the entrance also has a decorative cast-iron balustrade. Decorative stonework, woodwork and ironwork is prevalent throughout Rothesay, particularly on the larger houses in the suburbs such as Craigmore and Ardbeg.
