Scope and Content As Rothesay's popularity grew during the 19th century, the town expanded along the shore northwards to the fishing village of Port Bannatyne, and southwards to the dispersed hamlet of Ascog. The tiny area known as Montford developed on the northern edge of Ascog on a narrow strip of land between the shore and the steeply rising Common Hill inland. The pair of semi-detached houses known as Orcadia and dated 1860, were designed by local architect John Orkney (1928/9-1909), who also designed Wimbleton and Elysium Terrace on Mount Stuart Road in Craigmore. They demonstrate several features which copy the style of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, which is common in the adjacent Craigmore area of Rothesay. Features include the shallow pitched gabled outer bays, the curved five-light bay windows on the ground floors and the use of decorative cast-iron for the first-floor balconettes. The coped rubble boundary wall at the front of the properties has a nameplate within asplayed round-arched central panel.
