Scope and Content Craigmore developed as a destination for the wealthier residents and visitors to Rothesay during the 19th century. It consists of detached and semi-detached villas set in medium to large-sized plots along the shoreline. Its development was restricted by Common Hill rising steeply behind. This large detached whitewashed villa at 21 Craigmore Road sits in extensive grounds looking over the bay towards the mainland. Dating from the late 19th century, it has a few decorative features including the balustraded parapet above the ground floor canted bay window (right), the hoodmould above the first floor window above this, and also the pointed stone finial on the right-hand gable. IT also has unusual 'lying-pane' or horizontal glazing pattern to the ground floor windows. Larger detached villas like this were built across Rothesay for its wealthier residents or visitors, and many were subsequently converted into guest houses or small hotels. Some, like this one, do however remain as individual private residences.
