Scope and Content Craigmore developed as a destination for the wealthier residents and visitors to Rothesay during the 19th century. It consists of detached and semi-detached villas set in medium to large-sized plots along the shoreline. Its development was restricted by Common Hill rising steeply behind. This large detached, late 19th century, red sandstone villa at 24 Craigmore Road sits in an extensive corner plot looking over the bay towards the mainland. The most notable feature of the villa is the red and cream half-timbered Tudor first floor. In addition, the overhanging timber bracketed eaves at the gables and the timber bracketed balcony at first floor (centre right). The glazing pattern is distinctive with nine-pane upper and plate glass lower timber sash and case. Larger detached villas like this were built across Rothesay for its wealthier residents or visitors, and many were subsequently converted into guest houses or small hotels. This villa was converted into a convalescent home in the later 20th century, and substantially altered internally.
