Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. Academy Terrace is accessed by a flight of steps leading down a steep slope from Academy Road. A pend also leads from the front elevation to Argyle Street. Dating from the early 20th century, these six terraced houses are unusual in Rothesay, being in a ‘Garden City’ style. The two- and three-storeyed, harled and whitewashed terrace has a range of gables and sloping roofs, all giving a ‘cottagey’ feel to the group. This rear elevation has plain replacement windows throughout with slated canopies above doors leading to sloping rear gardens. The front elevation of the terrace has mock half-timbering to the first floor, with mostly original glazing comprising four- and six-pane stained glass upper and plate-glass lower sash windows. The terracotta roof ridge tiles with ball finials are an additional decorative feature.
