Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. This shows the original decorative cast-iron railings on the boundary walls to the semi-detached villas at 9 (Ard-darach) and 11 (Ardlerag) Academy Road. The use of such decorative ironwork is one of Rothesay’s main features, and there are many fine examples of it throughout the town. These railings are a rare survival in this part of Rothesay however. The group of detached and semi-detached Victorian villas displays several features which are seen throughout Rothesay, including Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson-style shallow-pitch roofs with deep bracketed eaves. The use of many large windows, including bay windows, on the front elevation allows maximum light into the properties as well as taking full advantage of the views across the Bay from the elevated position above the town.
