Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. The main road from the town centre follows the shoreline along Argyle Place, which leads on to the outer reaches of Ardbeg and Port Bannatyne. This large detached villa at 26 Argyle Place was built in 1894 as a manse for one of Rothesay's many churches. It is two-storeyed plus basement, with a polygonal tower projecting from the outer left, and a ground-floor canted bay window to the right. The arched entrance doorway sits well back to the right, with an armorial panel dated '1894' above. Most of Rothesay's seafront properties have large bay windows facing onto the bay, letting in as much light as possible as well as taking full advantage of the views across the bay. This villa has bipartite and tripartite tall narrow windows letting light into the property on all elevations.
