Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. The main road from the town centre follows the shoreline along Argyle Place, which leads on to the outer reaches of Ardbeg and Port Bannatyne. This shows a pair of semi-detached villas at 27 and 28 Argyle Place, which sit right at the edge of Skeoch Wood. Dating from the late 19th century, the pair are in an elevated position above the main coastal road. Unusually for a seafront property, there are no decorative features, with plain paired entrance doors reached by plain balustraded steps. There are full-height canted bay windows in the outer bays. Most of Rothesay's seafront properties have large bay windows facing onto the bay, letting in as much light as possible as well as taking full advantage of the views across the bay.
