Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu
Catalogue Number AG 10905
Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images
Scope and Content Detail of cross-shaft, Colonsay House, Colonsay, Argyll and Bute This carved stone was found near the old chapel of Riasg Buidhe on Colonsay, but is now at Colonsay House. It is pillar-shaped and has been carved to form a stylised cross. This is a detail of the upper part of the cross. The head is meant to represent God or Christ. It is a human face with prominent eyebrows and possibly a beard. Similar images were found on pilgrims' flasks from Jerusalem. Although this slab has no Scottish parallels, it belongs to a group of stones represented in Ireland. It is thought to be a symbol of the crucifixion inspired by the art of the Mediterranean.
