Scope and Content Jarlshof, Sumburgh, Shetland Islands The first Viking settlers were attracted to Shetland because of its narrow inlets of sea and fertile land. Their legacy can be found in almost every place name. The extensive remains at Jarlshof span 4,000 years of history. The earliest remains are of a Bronze Age settlement (beside the museum). An Iron Age broch and settlement lies beside the 16th-century laird's house, and Norse longhouses lie to the right. As in Ireland and the Hebrides, the Norse settlers married into the local population, their customs and language becoming dominant over time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
