Scope and Content Ballachulish from the north, Highland The village of Ballachulish was developed around slate quarries established in 1693. Waste material from the quarries was used to create the nearby harbour. Most of the housing was built in the 20th century by the local council to provide accommodation for quarry workers, although the site ceased working in 1955. This shows the village with its rows of houses (centre), harbour (bottom left), slate quarries (left) and the remains of a later prehistoric fort known as Cnocan Dubh on the rocky knoll near the coast (centre bottom). The quarry on the far left of the photograph is now partly flooded. The slate quarries at Ballachulish produced roofing slates used all over Scotland and beyond. The harbour made it easy for cargoes to be loaded for despatch to other ports. In the 18th century ships would be loaded by hand with men throwing planks across from the shore and forming a human chain until the hold was full. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
