Scope and Content Square of Whaligoe and Whaligoe Steps, Caithness, Highland The narrow inlet at Whaligoe afforded limited shelter for fishing boats, particularly during storms and the spring tides. To prevent smaller boats being dashed up against the rocks the fishermen would haul them out of the water and secure them from hooks that were fixed into the cliff face. Whaligoe, translated as 'whale geo' or inlet of whales, lies on the north-east coast of Caithness. It is a narrow inlet flanked by sheer cliffs that was once a small but thriving fishing port. This view shows the Square of Whaligoe (upper left), a 19th-century dwelling with a fish curing yard attached. This sits at the top of the Whaligoe steps which wind down the steep northern side of the inlet to a small quay. Part of the mid-19th century water driven cornmill at Whaligoe can also be seen (centre top). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
