Scope and Content St Kilda, Western Isles, from east This is a general view of the village on St Kilda. It is situated at the base of Conachair, the highest hill on the island. The owner of St Kilda, John Macpherson MacLeod, decided to have new houses constructed after a hurricane damaged many houses in the village in 1860. The traditional 'black houses' were left beside the new houses, and were used as byres. Behind the village are many small buildings known as 'cleits'. These were used for the storage of items including food, clothes, dried meat, hay and fuel. Some large cleits were converted from older dwelling houses. The St Kilda group of islands consists of Hirte (often known as St Kilda), Soay, Dun and Boreray. The islands are situated 64km to the west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and are one of the remotest areas in Britain. The largest island, Hirte, is approximately 1,575 acres in extent.
