Scope and Content Damper on chimney, Commondyke Brick Works, Common, East Ayrshire Alexander Transport Ltd started Commondyke Brick Works after World War II and operated the business until 1977 when the works closed. The Scottish Brick Corporation took over Alexander's business in 1978 but the works remained closed with the kiln being demolished in 1981. This shows the damper (metal door in centre) which controlled the draught from the chimney to the 30-chamber continuous kiln. With a continuous kiln a fire was lit in the first chamber and the draught from a tall chimney drew the heat through each chamber where the bricks were fired. Bricks made from fireclay are able to withstand high temperatures without melting or softening. Fireclay bricks can be used in both industrial and domestic buildings and are therefore often found in steelwork furnaces and household fireplaces. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
