Scope and Content Kiln, Avonbridge Brick Works, Falkirk The Avonbridge Brick Works in Avonbridge, Falkirk were established about 1952 by Afton Brick Co Ltd. They were operated for a time by the Caledonian Peat Co Ltd, and latterly by the London & Northern Group. The works were closed on 9 September 1977. This is a view of the continuous kiln, which is a 28-chambered, brick-built and barrel-arched Hoffmann. Each chamber has a wicket, or entrance, and a damper, which controlled the flow of air and gases into the main flue. The Hoffmann kiln was patented in 1858, and by 1873 it was said that over 1,000 Hoffmann kilns were operating in Europe. Fuel is dropped into the kiln through up to 16 feed-holes in the arch of each chamber. Coal was the most common fuel to be used in the kiln, with oil and gas becoming more usual after 1945.
