Scope and Content Detail of fireplace in first-floor 'Green Bedroom', No 34 Esplanade Terrace, Joppa, Edinburgh Esplanade Terrace lines the road overlooking the beach at Joppa. No 34 is one of many bay windowed, flat-roofed houses built c.1890, when the Joppa was a popular holiday resort. The house was originally owned by an accomplished painter/decorator. This photograph shows the hand-decorated fireplace with its Latin inscription; 'SALVE' meaning 'good day' or 'good health', and gilded wreaths. The door is painted with stylised flower motifs. The fire grate has a gilded surround and tiled hearth. Most rooms in Victorian homes would have had an open fire to heat the room. In wealthy households, maidservants would get up early each morning to remove ashes and light the fires before their employers awoke. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
