Scope and Content Fort, Knowe Kniffling, Scottish Borders This fort occupies the summit of a hill between the valleys of the Holms Water and the Kilbucho Burn. Oval on plan, it has at least four lines of defence, probably representing several periods of construction, but all have been heavily robbed of stone. Viewed from almost directly overhead, this photograph shows how little of the fort survives above ground level. Such sites are vulnerable to changes in land use, for instance the forestry ploughing top left and the pasture improvement bottom left. Large numbers of forts are found throughout the Border counties and into Lanarkshire. Most were occupied in the middle centuries of the first millennium BC. In many cases they have been heavily robbed for building stone and only slight traces are visible. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
