Scope and Content View of eastern dovecot at Carskiey from south-west, Argyll and Bute This dovecot, known as the eastern dovecot, stands about 45m south-east of Carskiey House. Carskiey was held by the Macnortheil family from the beginning of the 16th century until 1907 when the estate changed hands and a new mansion house was built. This dovecot is octagonal and has a slated pyramidal roof. The entry-holes for the pigeons are directly below the eaves. The dovecot dates to the late 18th or early 19th century and its interior has been completely remodelled. Dovecots were a necessary feature of most Scottish estates as pigeons provided fresh meat with which to vary the monotonous winter diet of salted meat but dovecots were unusual in the Highlands due to the lack of corn, which was needed to feed the birds.
