Scope and Content View of rear face of watchman's stone at Barbreck's Well, Argyll and Bute Situated in a wooded valley east of the Lochgilphead-Oban road at Barbreck, this stone stands at the head of a well marked by a stone-slabbed cistern. It was recorded in 1833 at a site in Kilkerran but was restored to its original position after 1910. Some of the text is illegible or erased. That still legible reads: 'This effigies which you see here, Its be holding all that comes its, Neir to this new-found spring which heir runs out of a rock and are welcome to drink of it'. This stone, carved with Roman capitals, is thought to have been erected by Archibald Campbell of Barbreck in 1714. He had succeeded his father by 1691 and was deprived of the estate in 1732. The family is said to have moved to Kintyre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
