Scope and Content View of principal façade of Kilmory Castle, Argyll and Bute Kilmory Castle, a house which was begun in the 18th century for the Campbells of Kilmory, was extended in 1816 and consisted then of a rectangular block with a central wing. Sir John Powlett Orde bought the estate in 1828 and made many changes. Joseph Gordon Davis, the architect, remodelled and extended the house between 1828 and 1836. This principal façade is seven bays wide with a projecting central bay. The central bay has a large five-light window above an arched entrance. There are hood-moulds above all the windows in this range. On either side of the range there is a tower. At the top, both towers are corbelled and battlemented. The tower to the right is octagonal in shape, while the tower to the left is square. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
