Scope and Content View of reception hall in Kilmory Castle from the north-west, Argyll and Bute In 1816, Kilmory Castle, which had 18th-century origins, consisted of a rectangular house with a central wing. This was incorporated into a Tudor Gothic mansion built for Sir John Powlett Orde between 1828 and 1836, which was again extended in 1860-78. In 1974 Kilmory Castle was bought by Argyll and Bute District Council and converted into their administrative headquarters. This reception hall was originally the carriage entrance into the castle, through the principal façade. The carriage entrance extended through the depth of the house. The principal façade was designed and built by the London architect, Joseph Gordon Davis, between 1828 and 1836. Each end of the entrance has been glazed by the council.
