Scope and Content Effigy, Oronsay Priory, Oronsay, Argyll and Bute Over 30 medieval graveslabs are now stored in the building known as the Prior's House. In the 15th century the priory became an important centre for stone carving, creating products of what has become known as the 'Oronsay school'. This tapered slab of the Oronsay school bears the low-relief effigy of an Augustinian canon in choir vestments. He wears a cassock, a surplice and a monastic cloak whose hood is drawn up over his tonsured head. His feet rest on a beast. The square label above the canon is inscribed in relief and translates as 'Here lies Canon Bricius (Gilbride) MacMhuirich with his brethren'. Two angels support a tasselled pillow under his head.
