Scope and Content Sheet of handwritten notes - 'Key to photographs and drawings'. Signed: 'Hugh W Young' "So ruinous was the wall that it could only be photographed in 'tiers'. The drawings are copie of drawings done by myself. Wall:. Width of rampart 24 feet, height of remains 17 feet. Height of face to seawards 9 ft 7inches Height of back or inner wall about 3 ft 9 inches ----------------- Front wall to seaward dressed stones: Foundation stones boulders about 12 inches deep inwards, 15 to 18 inches long, 10 inches deep. 2nd row of stones 2 feet 3 inches long in face 5 inches thick 18 inches deep in wall 3rd row 16 to 18 inches long in face 2 1/2 inches thick 12 inches deep in wall Row of stones 6 feet up in wall 2 ft 1 1/2 in. facing 1 ft 8 in broad, 6 in thick ---------------- Back or inner face undressed stones On pebbles, 1st, two to three inches decayed oak & sand next large boulders stones next 2 or 3 inches decayed oak next flat stones & oak logs ------------------ Width of top of wall 2 ft 3 inches Width of foundation of walls about 4 ft. (signed) Hugh W. Young ------------------- The question of lime in the wall I cannot solve - it may or may not have been. Soil in the wall might be analysed.
