Scope and Content Aerial view of Ballone Castle, near Portmahomack, Highland Ballone Castle was built in the mid 16th century as the stronghold of the Dunbars of Easter Tarbat. It was extended in the early 17th century. The castle is a Z-plan tower-house. It stands on a good defensive site on high ground overlooking the sea. It is well equipped with gun-loops and projecting corner turrets. Tower-houses were popular with the wealthy gentry from the later Middle Ages until the 17th century. Though not strong enough to withstand a proper military assault with artillery, they provided security against raiders and attacks by rival factions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
