Scope and Content Choir-stalls, King's College Chapel, Aberdeen King's College was founded by Bishop Elphinstone in 1495 with the support of King James IV, hence the name. The university was a truly Renaissance institution with a classical humanist curriculum modelled on that of the University of Paris. The 52 Flemish-style oak choir-stalls were commissioned by Bishop Elphinstone. The stalls are finely carved with oak leaves, acorns, vines and grapes. The canopies above the stalls have a variety of fillings and crocketted pinnacles. The choir screen and stalls are a rare survival in Scotland of medieval church furnishings. They may have been made locally, possibly by John Fendour who had worked on the choir-stalls at St Nicholas, Aberdeen. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
