Description Photograph Album No 156: THE J M Arthur Album Hard-backed album covered with dark green cloth, no 17881 made by Robert Miller, Glasgow (fl. c.1865-c.1965) containing 95 pages. Inscribed J Maurice Arthur, West Parkhill, Airdrie, the album is a collection of photographs of buildings designed by him. It includes a pencil sketch of him in 1911 drawn on office writing paper headed Geo. Arthur & Son . . . 4 Graham Street, Airdrie . . . 190... and a few military portraits including him. It also contains a collection of professional photographs of buildings in France, Italy, Belgium and a few in England and Scotland. Shown are views of Port Glasgow including the station, the Star Hotel, shops including J Duguid (Hairdresser), The George (Wines & Spirits), H Reid (dairy) and C Telfer, A Turner, A Morris and W McCallum, Semple & Smart (chemists), Ye Old Black Bull and R Taylor (dairy). Also included are views of Cathedral Street and Bridgeton Cross and The Olympia Theatre of Varieties, Glasgow; the Masonic Temple and J & W Watson (ladies and gents tailors), Graham Street, Airdrie 1906; Queen Victoria Nurses Memorial Home, Airdrie 1904-6; Royal Buildings and New Town Cross, Airdrie with the Royal Hotel and Royal Bank of Scotland; British Linen Bank/Bank of Scotland, 10 Stirling Street, Airdrie 1901; the opening of Airdrie Savings Bank, Bellshill 1925 with a group of people; the Craig Institute, Caldercruix; the Bank of Scotland, Church Street, Coatbridge, and New Monkland Kirk, Condorra Road, Glenmavis with views iinside and outside before and after renovation. A view of the High United Free church, Minister Rev. John Cook, BD shows a programme for the unveiling of a 1914-18 War memorial panel and communion table on 9 April 1922. Several Masonic groups are shown and there are many photographs taken from magazines showing buildings in France.

Scope and Content One photograph has been identified as Greenmount, County Antrim designed by C. R. Cockerell. Several regimental groups include the officers of 65 Div. RE in June 1917; others identified are Wilson (stores), Guthrie (Adjt.) CRE, Swire (Education), and a group at RE Headquarters, 15 Div. Tubise, January 1919.
