Scope and Content Exhibition rooms, the Royal Scottish Academy, The Mound, Edinburgh The Royal Scottish Academy was designed by William Playfair in 1822-6 for the Board of Manufactures and Fisheries to accommodate the Royal Society, the Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts, and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. The interior has been completely altered since Playfair's day. In 1909-11 a new staircase and a set of upper-level galleries, in a simple Classical style, were added. There are now six large rooms for exhibitions. Every spring the Royal Scottish Academy mounts a large exhibition of new paintings, sculptures, and architectural models and drawings, as well as special exhibitions during the Edinburgh Festival.
