Scope and Content Fort, Cow Castle, Lanarkshire This fort occupies one end of an isolated ridge, while a small settlement occupies the other. The fort displays at least two periods of construction and contains traces of four timber round-houses. The nearby settlement also contains two round-houses. This aerial photograph was taken from the SW in the winter, when fleeting traces of snow still lay on the ground. The fort can be seen occupying the SW end of the ridge, and the settlement lies in a field of improved pasture no more than 150m to the NE. Numerous forts and settlements of 1st millennium BC date are found throughout the Border counties and into Lanarkshire. As here, some settlements lie close to forts, but this probably indicates different periods of occupation rather than contemporary use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
