Scope and Content Cross-incised stone, Cleit 74, St Kilda, Inverness-shire From the 6th to the 8th centuries monks from Ireland were founding monasteries, often within enclosures, on Scotland's west coast. It is likely that some Early Christian settlers came to St Kilda. A visitor in 1697 found three chapels. This incomplete cross forms part of the ceiling of Cleit 74. It probably came from Christ Church, one of the three chapels. Similar crosses have been found in graveyards in Argyll, the Western Isles and Shetland. Some of the crosses are dated to between the 7th and 9th centuries and some to the 10th-14th centuries. It is not possible to say whether this cross was the work of a pre-Norse or a late Norse/early medieval community. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
