Scope and Content Aerial view of Hutton Motte, Dumfries and Galloway Situated in a commanding position at the north-eastern end of a flat-topped ridge are the remains of a medieval motte. Slight traces of its bailey lie to the south-west. Damage by rabbits, sheep and cattle has disturbed the surviving earthworks. The motte stands some 7m high, surrounded by a broad ditch. The flattened top has been eroded, giving the mound a conical shape. During the reign of David I (1124-1153) many Norman nobles received estates across southern Scotland. Motte-and-bailey castles served as potent symbols of feudal lordship, as well as being a fortified residence. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
