Scope and Content Fort and settlement at Knock Hill, Dumfries and Galloway Situated some 2km SW of Beattock, Knock Hill commands extensive views. Stone robbing has damaged both the fort and the overlying settlement, and little now remains of any interior structures. Narrow cultivation terraces survive just to the SE of the fort. The fort's rampart and partly rock-cut ditch are better preserved to the right of the field wall. After abandonment, a settlement within the bank was constructed inside the fort. Around the end of the 1st millennium, forts across the Borders area were being abandoned. Some were partially reoccupied, with enclosures built inside older defences. Pollen evidence suggests there was substantial forest clearance around this time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
