Scope and Content Queen Street, Edinburgh Ceiling in the front drawing-room of No 64 No 64 Queen Street, built in 1790 for Francis, 7th Earl of Wemyss, was, like Baron Orde's house at No 8 Queen Street and Sir Lawrence Dundas' mansion in St Andrew Square, one of the grandest houses in the New Town. The front drawing-room ceiling, in a similar style to ceilings designed by Robert Adam, is divided into segments and panels, arranged around a centrepiece. The panels contain Classical figures and motifs in relief. The elegance and Roman nobility of the Adam style were universally popular. However, other styles developed in the last quarter of the 18th century, such as the Gothic and Greek Revival styles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
