Scope and Content Objects from the excavations of Sir Francis Tress Barry, c.1900 Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) excavated over 30 archaeological sites in Caithness between 1890 and 1906. This photograph illustrates only a fraction of the bone and stone objects found during his excavations. Barry recognised that his knowledge of archaeology was limited and relied on help and advice from others. Dr J Anderson, Keeper of the National Museum of Antiquities, was in regular contact with Barry and provided expert advice on the excavated objects. Sir Francis Tress Barry was MP for Windsor, Berkshire between 1890 and 1906. He had enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic and business career, and began to take an active interest in archaeology after his purchase of Keiss Castle, Caithness in 1890.
