Description Alyth High Parish Church Turret Clock. Checking the time and lifting the weights.

Date 25/8/2023

Collection Historic Environment Scotland

Catalogue Number MV 001028

Category Digital Files (Non-image)

Scope and Content Mr Bruce Maxwell, Clock Winder, on winding the clock. The manual winding of the clock means that the clock actually loses time by 30 seconds to a minute depending on what the time is within the hour that it is wound. A lever (shown) is used to make the adjustment (00:10). It is set by a small pocket watch (atomic) that the clock winder keeps with him. He shows the adjustment procedure (00:36). The next thing to be done is the large weight adjustment using the geared winding jack - this takes 140 turns pre week. This lifts the weights and a 'clicking' is heard. This should not be done for a quarter hour before the hour strikes as it can cause the mechanism to jam as the clock is moving (02:10). Sound: sound Colour: colour Running time: 2.24 mins.
