Scope and Content 1950s postcard of Culross, Fife Culross became a burgh of barony dependent on the nearby Cistercian abbey in 1490. The abbey's coal mines passed to Sir George Bruce in 1575. In 1592, his friend, James VI, turned Culross into a royal burgh with a monopoly on making iron scone-girdles. The tower of the medieval abbey church is just visible above the trees in the middle of the picture. The early 17th-century town-house (left) is recognised by its central tower, an 18th-century addition. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
