Date 1991

Collection RCAHMS Aerial Photography

Catalogue Number B 46960

Scope and Content Aerial view of the fort at Rangecastle, Dumfries and Galloway This fort is situated on a rocky knoll at the western end of a flat-topped ridge, commanding views in all directions. Roughly oval on plan, the fort comprises a rampart drawn around the base of the rocky knoll, enclosing a featureless interior. On the south-west (bottom) an additional arc of rampart protects the entrance, and a hollow way runs to the summit of the knoll. Whilst appearing impressive, many forts probably were constructed as displays of prestige and power by tribal leaders, often occupying prominent positions in the landscape.
