Scope and Content Cairnpapple, West Lothian 3,000 years of ceremonial activity took place at the henge and cairns at Cairnpapple Hill. The hill commands impressive views across central Scotland and was obviously of significance to the prehistoric communities. The oval Neolithic henge with ditch and external bank are clearly visible in this aerial view, as well as the mound of the central cairn. Excavations have also revealed cremations and burials. During the Bronze Age many older monuments were reused as burial sites probably because these places were regarded as special or holy. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
