Scope and Content Aerial view of Floors Castle, Scottish Borders This shows the main block in the centre with the west block on the left and the east block on the right. The driveways lead to a wide open forecourt which gives access to the three blocks. On the far left is a swimming pool with a greenhouse by William Playfair behind. Alterations made by William Playfair include the addition of pepperpot turrets at the corners of all the towers and the crenellated parapet encircling the whole castle. William Playfair retained the original usage of the blocks during his alterations. The main block contained family bedrooms, and reception rooms used by the family to entertain guests. The west block contained servant rooms and the main service rooms including a kitchen and a laundry. The east block contained stables where the horses and carriages used by the family were kept, and bedrooms for the groom and stable hands. Floors Castle was built in 1718 for the 1st Duke of Roxburghe and was probably designed by John Vanburgh (1664-1726) with alterations by William Adam (1689-1748). The 6th Duke of Roxburghe commissioned William Playfair (1790-1857) to alter and extend the castle between 1838 and 1849. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
