Description Blacksmith's Shop, Inaclete Road, Stornoway

Date 6/2/2018

Collection Historic Environment Scotland

Catalogue Number MV 000802

Category Digital Files (Non-image)

Scope and Content Interior. Blacksmith, Inaclete Road, Stornoway, Lewis. Blacksmith, Mr MacLeod, explains the cast iron wheel bed on which cart wheels were made or repaired. This had been relocated inside the blacksmith shop. It would have originally sat outside on the roadway. It is unknown when this relocation was carried out. Wheel making and repair was a highly skilled job. It is still used as a base for hammering by Mr MacLeod but cartwheels are no longer made. Such blacksmiths shops or smithies or smiddys were once commonplace. They made and repaired agricultural tools, did farrier work (shoeing of horses) and repaired lorries. This is a rare example of a working blacksmith's shop. Sound Colour: colour Running Time: 2 minute 36 seconds (02:36 mins)
